Aim:
I want to find out what happens when you put skittles in water.
Method:
Equipment
- 8x SKITTLES
- warm water
- beaker
- petri dish
- paper towel
Instructions
- get your equipment
- put the skittles into the Petri dish
- spread them around the sides
- clean the beaker and dry it
- gently pour the water into the middle of the Petri dish
- observe how the skittles react.
This was a very fun experiment all in all.
Results: the skittles leaked their colours into the middle of the petri dish as soon as the water was tipped into it, and the only colour left in them was at the top where they could not be submerged by the water. That's called diffusion. As a result, most of them appeared to take a crystallised form. But, the reason the colours didn't MIX while they were taking the travels to the middle of the dish is because of something called water stratification. That is the reason. The reason that the bottom half of the skittles will appear crystallised is because of the skittle's coating (called Shellac) being ripped off the lolly by the water along with the colour. It will also feel bumpy as it takes on the form. (don't take that the wrong way please. if you do that's not my fault)
The water also tasted very sugary because of all the colour of the skittles going into the water, obviously, and the colours have sugar in them. That's my explanation.
Well, I don't know what else to say, apart from this MAY have been the most enjoyable experiment I've done yet. Maybe apart from the edible slime one, but as I'm writing this I don't know.
I hope you enjoyed reading this longer than average blog and I'll see y'all next week probably.
