2021 reflections: Term 2

Term 2 was a fun term, again apart from some other things that happened, "but that's a different story." -Swiss001

First week was a bit of a shocker, because of the fact that I was just coming off my first term, and I had to search all around the school pretty much on monday morning to get to what I had period 1. (woodwork) Then, after that the week was fairly calm, apart from science which started right of the bat being obviously my favourite choice class of the term.

Second week was slightly calmer, wananga was once again my favourite class, followed by science. I loved being able to just be alone as long as I wanted without interruption.

Third week was a highlight for sure, as in science we were able to do our first experiment, Hands on Fire.

Fourth was the same as the third week, and I'm getting tired of doing week logs so I'm just gonna note highlights from now on.

In week 6, we started our steam kete for the end of term display thing, and err my group came up with something very interesting. NOT. Our product was a rocket that travels in a network of tunnels and it travels very fast across the whole world.

Not much happened from there on but it was definitely a fun term and I was looking forward to the holidays.

Mentos and Coke experiment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Aim:

I want to find out what happens when you drop mentos into coke.

Research

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBq3f5nRr5U

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4MLPkTrOq4

Method:

Equipment

Coke bottle (no sugar) (size optional)

Pack of mint mentos, optional size (The more size, the more craziness!)

Towel (paper or not is optional)

Detergent

You could either use coke no sugar or sprite.

Remember, if it's a big pack of mentos, it has to be a big bottle of coke.

Instructions

1. get your equipment

2. put on your safety glasses

3. pour some coke into test tube or cup

4. place a towel under the cup

5. place the mentos into the test tube or cup

6. observe

Results

In the coke bottle, the surface of the mentos is rough, and that allows the bonds between the carbon dioxide gases and the coke, to break easier, helping the creation of carbon dioxide bubbles as the surface of the lolly is dissipating into the coke while the coke is busy fizzing about. Because the mentos are rather dense and collect moisture, they sink through the coke while dissipating and becoming a part of the coke which triggers a large bubble build up.

This was also the last science period until term 4, I'll miss you mr stock

End of term 2 hurumanu 1 learning story

Today, since it's the end of the term, we did some sort of a term reflection called learning story. I am just lazy and don't want to write much so I'll just put in a screenshot of it.

thanks for reading

Hurumanu 3 - Term 2 Reflection

Hello there, come to see the new disney movie? Well, you're in the right place.

This term in Hurumanu 3, we have been doing a unit called Shaping Up. This unit was about geometry and shapes, and we learnt a lot. It was very difficult.

First, we started learning about different types of lines. Our first activity of the term was drawing a matariki star in our math books. It was fun, and I enjoyed drawing the lines to the precise spot I wanted them to be.

Next, we started learning about polygons. We read something on what they are and answered 10 questions about them. It was also fun, literally failing stuff that I thought was correct and they dying of laughter, and then after we did all that we did a polygon investigator activity where you had to draw random lines across the paper and then investigate to see whether any of them were polygons.

Then, we started learning about different angles and learnt about stuff like parallel lines, intersecting lines, points, rays, and normal lines. Like hell we didn't already know what a normal line was.

After that, we started learning about reflection, rotation and translation. No, I'm not talking about the rotation in a lowering mesocyclone convective system with a base wall cloud. I'm talking about the rotation of shapes. It started becoming more difficult here.

THEN, we started learning about lines of symmetry, and this was probably the last of the easy activities. At least it's what it felt like.

After THAT, we started learning about nets, and we did 2 kahoots for general knowledge. We did an activity where we had to connect the lines to the correct nets and shapes.

We learned about different cubes and stuff, and did a fun activity where we had to create different shapes with cubes.

Finally, we learnt about directions in the form of a map. I didn't find this fun for some reason, but a lot of other people did. It was still enjoyable to work everything out.

Milk Plastic

Aim: I want to find out how to turn milk into plastic.

watch this and i'll give you cookies

Method:

Equipment

  • Oven or stove
  • Measuring cup
  • tablespoon
  • a cup of milk
  • pot or microwaveable container
  • white vinegar
  • paper towels
  • spoon mug
  • optional - food colouring, glitter
  • teaspoon
  • plate or petri dish
  • plate
     instructions

pour a cup of milk from a measuring jug (if you were using a jug like THIS -

you would want to pour about 600mLs) into a pot or microwaveable container. if you're using a beaker then you pour 200mLs.

then, you heat the milk in a microwave or on a stove until it is steaming.

put it on a bench or something and add four teaspoons of vinegar to a mug.

add the hot milk to the mug with the vinegar

once the milk is added and the vinegar has taken its effects, stir the milk with a spoon

stack four layers of paper towels on a surface that is safe to get damp

scoop out the curds with a spoon and place them on the paper towels

fold the paper towels over the curds and pres down on them to absorb any excess liquid

knead all the curds together into a ball of dough

once you're done, mold and colour the dough as much as you like

if you want to, add glitter

put the dough on a plate or Petri dish and let it settle overnight

and you've done it!
